It’s no secret that Jack White is vinyl junkie, he recently set the record for the world’s fastest released record last month on Record Store Day. Now, White has announced the cool vinyl tricks and features on “The Ultra LP” for his new album “Lazaretto.” No, you won’t hear subliminal Satanic messages when you play it backwards. It’s way nuttier than that.
The 11-track album off of Third Man Records will play at the normal speed of 33.3RPM, but 1 hidden track plays at 78 RPM and one plays at 45 RPM, making this a 3-speed record. Side A plays from the outside in. Side B features dual groove technology, playing an electric or acoustic intro for “Just One Drink” depending on where you drop the needle.
Side A displays a hologram hand-etched by artist Tristan Duke. Watch his spinning angel appear to float in the blank area between the groove and the label. Side B is given a matte finish so that it resembles a shellac 78 rpm record.
“We’ve pulled off a lot of interesting ideas all within this one LP,” White says, believing the three speed record, dual groove, and hologram extras have never been been done before. He also added: “Of course there’s no knowing unless you go through every record ever made.”
