Check out our interview with model & philanthropist Sydney Brett.
A model for NYFW, Hamptons Fashion Week, Brooklyn Fashion Week and more with titles USA National Ms. New York & more, Sydney is currently a college student studying fashion merchandising and marketing with a leadership fellow.
She founded Stronger Than You Think in 2017 after years of being bullied to help raise awareness of the direct correlation between mental health and bullying, as mental health issues lead to bullying and, in turn, bullying to mental health issues. Stronger Than You Think offers anti-bullying workshops, girls empowerment workshops, parent workshops and even an “Unfiltered Photo Shoot” where kids will partake in a raw, unfiltered photoshoot and discuss how social media impacts young people and their vision of beauty.
Hi Sydney, please tell us a little about you?
I am currently a college student studying fashion merchandising and marketing. I am from Long Island New York. My future career goal is to be a stylist at a fashion magazine. I have my own non-profit organization, called Stronger Than You Think. My interests include community service, traveling, fashion, beauty and modeling.
Describe yourself in 3 words?
Compassionate, determined and outgoing
What is fun and rewarding about modeling?
I have only had positive experiences when it comes from modeling. Some of my favorite things that modeling has given me, is the friendships that I made, the people I have met and the opportunity to travel.
What did you learn from your biggest failure?
That it does not matter how many times I fall down it’s about how you handle yourself when you get back up.
The most important thing when you are shooting is?
Being on time, flexible and friendly.
Now talking about Instagram, can you share some tips for keeping your account interesting?
Post what you like and what you are interested in as opposed to what everyone else is doing.
Now tell us about your on-profit “Stronger Than You Think?”
It is a 501C(3) organization who aims to equip kids with the tools they need to be confident in who they are. At the core of the organization, it teaches kids to be kind to themselves and others. The organization seeks to stop hate by educating schools, students and parents about the importance of diversity and inclusion. It merges together the importance of anti-bullying and mental health awareness.
Where can we learn more about it?
If you are a book, what would be the title of the book and why?
Unstoppable-because I go after what I want, and even if I have an obstacle in my way I do not stop until I reach my end goal.
What advice would you give to your younger self and why?
Never give up and to always stand up for what you believe in.
Do you support any charities?
Besides my own nonprofit I support many others including, Stomp Out the Bully, Boys and Girls Club and the Ronald McDonald House.
How would you explain your fashion style and what items in your closet can you not be without?
My fashion style is colorful, fun and sophisticated. A good pair of jeans, fitted black and white tops, pastel color block blazer and my Loveshackfancy floral mini dress.
How would your best friend describe you?
Funny, kind, and caring
What’s next for Sydney Brett in 2022?
I hope to grow my nonprofit to a larger audience and speak at schools and speak to kids about the importance of kindness. I hope to grow my modeling portfolio by working with larger fashion brands and to hope to begin to get brand deals.
What is your favorite healthy food?
And your favorite cheat food?
What is your idea of a perfect Sunday?
Sleep in, meet up with friends for brunch, dress up and take pictures and of course shopping.
What would be the dream holiday, and who would you go with?
I would love to go to the South of France and Paris. I would love to go with family.
Name 3 things you can’t live without?
Phone, lip oil and family/friends
What music do you like?
What do you think of Social Media?
I have a love hate relationship with social media. The pros being connecting with friends and family, growing a platform and raising awareness for important issues and sharing your interests. The cons are the high standards society puts on us and constantly comparing yourself to others, as well as you do not get to see what someone’s life is really about because we only share the good stuff.
