Few coaches are as synonymous with college basketball as Duke University’s Mike Krzyzewski, and even fewer have reached the milestone he just clinched. Coach K cements his legacy of sustained success as the first coach in Division 1 men’s college basketball, and the second coach in NCAA history, to notch 1,000 game wins. Nike celebrates Krzyzewski’s historic accomplishment with special-edition “Coach K Celebration” tee.
Since Coach Krzyzewski’s tenure began in 1980, Duke has won four national championships (1991, 1999, 2001 and 2010), made 11 Final Four appearances and accumulated 82 NCAA Tournament wins. His teams have claimed 12 ACC regular seasons and won 13 ACC Tournament championships. It’s no surprise that students camp out for months to gain access to Duke’s small (9,314-person capacity) yet raucous Cameron Indoor Stadium. Thanks to Coach K, their beloved Blue Devils give them something to go crazy for at every game.
Krzyzewski’s dedication to the sport extends to his career with USA Basketball. He has led the U.S. Men’s National Team as head coach at various levels since 1987, winning repeat World Championships (2010 and 2014) and Olympic gold medals (2008 and 2012). Additionally, Krzyzewski served as assistant coach on 1984’s gold medal team and with the 1992 Dream Team. His commitment to USA Basketball extends to 2016 in Rio and the quest for a three-peat.
“Coach Mike Krzyzewski has an esteemed resume that includes four National Championships, four Gold Medals, 12 National Coach of the Year awards, and now can add 1,000 college wins to the list. Congratulations Coach K. It has been our honor to be associated with you for twenty years. Truly a Hall of Fame coach and a Hall of Fame human being..” – Phil Knight, Co-Founder and Chairman of Nike, Inc.
