Describe your sound in three words.
Ethereal, Emotive, narrative.
Who influenced you, and why did you choose to make music?
I never really chose to make music, it feels as though music chose me. I always admired musicians on youtube such as Ed Sheeran when growing up and was inspired by my Dad and Brother who played guitar. Seeing other people pursue music made me instantly attracted to the idea of making songs, this led me to writing my first song at age 8. Since I’ve been writing, my main influences have been Billie Eilish and Post Malone.
Do you play any instruments?
I play the guitar and piano, I taught myself using YouTube.
Do you ever get nervous?
Before stepping onto the stage, I always feel those familiar butterflies fluttering in my stomach, but I’ve come to realize they’re more about excitement than anything else. It’s like a surge of energy coursing through me, ready to burst forth as soon as I hit that first note. Once I’m up there, connecting with my fans, those nerves just melt away. It’s like the moment I step into my element, everything falls into place, and I’m just in the zone, soaking up every moment.
Tell us about your new EP, “Melancholy?”
Let me introduce you to “Melancholy,” an EP I worked on with BMG, a renowned production company known for collaborating with artists like Rita Ora and John Legend. When BMG signed me to create six tracks for film, television, and digital media, I felt inspired by the opportunity to blend ethereal and cinematic elements into the music, aiming to take listeners on a journey beyond the ordinary.
The heart behind this EP was to craft music that breaks free from traditional boundaries, serving as a backdrop for visual storytelling across different platforms. With BMG’s support and appreciation for compelling melodies and hooks, I poured my soul into this project.
When BMG heard the finished EP, their reaction was incredibly positive: “I am LOVING this EP, such strong tracks and awesome hooks!!” Their excitement was truly validating, confirming my abilities as a songwriter and artist.
“Melancholy” isn’t just an EP—it’s a reflection of my exploration into the complex emotions we all experience. I structured it to showcase this duality: the first three tracks radiate happiness and lightness, while the last three dive into deeper emotional depths. By using lowercase letters for the titles of the first three tracks and capital letters for the last three, I wanted to create a journey that resonates deeply with listeners.
Despite the upbeat vibe of the first three tracks, the lyrics throughout the EP tell a story of sadness, longing, and introspection. That’s why I chose to title the EP ‘Melancholy’—to capture the bittersweet essence of human emotions.
What’s the story behind the songs?
Track 1: “Easy to Fall out of Love” – This track is like a journey through heartbreak and introspection. Inspired by UK garage sounds and dreamy lo-fi vibes, it blends energetic melodies with heartfelt lyrics. The song explores themes of insecurity and vulnerability, capturing the raw emotions of someone falling out of love with me. This song was written from the perspective of someone I had fallen out of love with, so I put myself in their shoes to write this. Despite its upbeat tone, the lyrics reveal a deeper story of sadness and self-doubt, making it relatable to anyone navigating love and relationships in the digital age.
Track 2: “Selfish” – “Selfish” is a masterpiece of alternative pop, inspired by lofi dance tracks. It begins with a soothing guitar melody that gradually evolves into a danceable rhythm. The lyrics delve into the universal theme of longing and self-preservation, expressing conflicting emotions of desire and detachment. Enhanced by ethereal vocals and strategic reverb, the song creates a dream-like aura that resonates with listeners on a profound level.
Track 3: “Kinda Crazy” – “Kinda Crazy” is a mesmerizing shoegaze track that captures the complexities of love. With its atmospheric instrumentation and pulsating rhythm, it immerses listeners in a dreamy sonic landscape. The lyrics paint a vivid picture of love tinged with toxicity, exploring the dichotomy of dependence and frustration in a relationship.
Track 4: “Knees” – “Knees” is a gripping and emotionally intense track that immerses listeners in a somber and atmospheric sonic realm. Infusing elements of trap and rock, it crafts a distinct and enthralling sound. The lyrics delve into themes of anguish, heartache, and betrayal, laying bare raw vulnerability and emotional turmoil. Inspired by personal experience, the song recounts the journey of supporting an ex-partner through alcohol-related struggles, only to face betrayal in return. With its melancholic melody and brooding ambiance, “Knees” strikes a chord with audiences drawn to alternative and emo music, resonating deeply with those navigating similar emotional landscapes.
Track 5: “Sometimes” – “Sometimes” invites listeners into a tranquil and introspective sonic journey. Inspired by emotive soundscapes, it creates a chill vibe that resonates with those seeking relaxation and solace. The lyrics explore universal themes of overthinking and oversharing, inviting listeners to reflect on their own experiences. Personally, this song emerged from a moment of discomfort after sharing too much with someoneWith its gentle pulse of bass and subdued percussion, the song maintains a laid-back atmosphere while touching upon complex emotions.
Track 6: “I Need Somebody” – “I Need Somebody” is a hauntingly beautiful dark alternative pop anthem delving into themes of longing and dependency on love. Drawing inspiration from poignant melodies, it showcases a melancholic piano melody intertwined with electronic elements, intensifying its emotional depth. The lyrics convey profound feelings of insecurity and yearning, striking a chord with listeners on a deeply personal level. Personally, this song mirrors my own longing for love, as I often find being alone uncomfortable. With its gradual build-up and impactful culmination, the track makes a lasting impact, encapsulating the universal quest for self-acceptance and validation.
Were there any specific experiences or emotions that fueled the writing and composition of this song?
For each track on “Melancholy,” I drew inspiration from personal experiences and emotions, as well as the experiences of people around me. I have a very empathetic personality, which allows me to draw inspiration on different stories around me, as well as my own. I then channeled them into every lyric and melody. Whilst writing the EP, I had been experiencing feelings of low self esteem, betrayal and a toxic relationship which all influenced the lyrics.
How do you usually start working on a new song? Do you begin with lyrics, melodies, or a concept?
Since I was young, I’ve found comfort in writing. I used to write in my diary a lot, and I was always good at English in school. Writing comes naturally to me, and I’m known for being fast at it. When I write songs, I usually start with a melody. Then, I draw inspiration from my own emotions and the emotions of those around me to write lyrics that fit the music.
How involved were you in the production and arrangement of your new EP, “Melancholy?”
I was very involved in the production and arrangement of my EP. I was present in every session, including the mixing sessions. I directed the producers in terms of the sound I wanted to achieve and the instruments that were used on each song.
Now tell us about the feeling of having your music in popular shows like Netflix’s ‘Top Boy’ and ITV’s ‘Love Island’? That’s amazing!
Thank You! When I found out that my song had made it onto ‘Love Island’, it was a surreal moment. I’ve always had faith in my sound, but to see it gaining recognition on such a massive platform was overwhelming. That evening, I was flooded with messages from friends and family who had heard the song, and I felt immensely grateful. My very talented producer was able to get his song featured on Top Boy; however, this wasn’t a collaboration between us.
