Hi Sophie! Please tell us a little bit about yourself.
Hi! I’m Sophie. I grew up in Point Pleasant Beach, NJ playing guitar since the age of 7. Music was always something that excited me and since I was young I knew it was something I wanted to do for the rest of my life. I grew up in a small town and played with anyone and in any group I could get my hands on. I knew I was always destined for more so I followed that dream and moved to Nashville when I was 18 to attend Belmont University. This is when I really started to come into myself and immerse myself head first into what Nashville had to offer. I played guitar for almost every genre that you can think of. In 2020 when covid happened, I decided to venture off and start experimenting with making some music of my own. That’s how I fell into the SOPHIE SHREDZ project. I always knew I wanted to be making my own music but was too shy to put my own voice behind my feelings. This project has helped me come into my own and gives a voice to my shy younger self to express what I’ve always wanted to say. I wanted to blend all of my favorite genres to create something that is truly unique and curated to my musical background.
How would you describe your sound in three words?
Edgy, bold, and unique.
Who are your influences?
Ashnikko, Tash Sultana, Charli XCX, Led Zeppelin, Polyphia, and Poppy.
Why did you choose to start making music?
I started playing guitar at the age of seven and I never stopped since. I fell in love with the idea of creating and having these pieces of art that were unique to myself and my feelings. Growing up I was super shy and would hide behind my guitar as my emotional outlet. I was never good at saying how I felt until I started to develop the SHREDZ project. This project turned into all the things I wish I was brave enough to say out loud when I was in that shy era of my life. SOPHIE SHREDZ has brought out a whole new level of confidence within me and that’s what I hope to do for others as well.
Do you play any instruments?
Yes, I’m most proficient in guitar since that’s what I grew up playing. I actually played trombone and bass in my high school band, and I think I could probably still play some bass now if I had to.
Do you ever get nervous before performing?
I definitely get butterflies before getting onstage, but once I’m up there, I totally forget about it.
Tell us about your new single, “OMG.” What’s the story behind the song?
“OMG” is one of my favorites I’ve written for the SOPHIE SHREDZ project. I think it really opens up some new doors for my sound in terms of its heaviness. King John, AMAVA, and I had the idea to write this track about a person obsessing over someone since this is something I was dealing with at the time. When people talk about obsession it usually is in a positive light and I think we hit this concept with a new spin. I wanted it to be a darker twist about someone hating me so much they become obsessed.
Can you walk us through your creative process for this single? How did the idea come to life?
When we got in the studio to write it, I was feeling super inspired by rap and metal and wanted to mix those genres while also staying true to my brand. My producer, King John hit that right on the nose. We brought in Max Drummey to collaborate on some heavier guitar ideas. I was wanting a Tim Henson (Polyphia) type riff. When AMAVA and I hit the chorus and got the “rip me to shredz” line it changed everything for me.
Were there any specific experiences or emotions that fueled the writing and composition of this song?
At the time, there was someone constantly posting negative videos about me online. I felt like I was getting a lot of negative attention. Their posts started to become more and more frequent and in my head I was thinking “if you hate me so much then why do you post about me everyday?” It was inspired by this person that was totally obsessed with me in this weird and negative way.
How do you usually start working on a new song? Do you begin with lyrics, melodies, or a concept?
A lot of the time I’ll come in with a concept or a title and my team and I will work around that. We usually start with some sort of beat and see where it takes us. Each session is a new process and I think that’s something that’s really unique about our writing process.
How involved were you in the production and arrangement of your new single, “OMG”?
I was not super involved in the production of this one, but I did give my producer notes along the way. “OMG” kind of just came together naturally and felt super right so I didn’t even need to have as much involvement as I normally would.
What words of advice would you give to your younger self?
I would tell her to trust her instincts and always do what makes you happy. The universe is always putting you where you’re meant to be.
How would your best friend describe you?
My best friend would describe me as loyal, funny, and confident. I always try to make everyone feel loved and included.
What’s next for Sophie Shredz in 2024?
2024 has a lot of new stuff in store for the SOPHIE SHREDZ project. I’m super excited to share it all with the world. I’m working on an album and a tour later in the year. Definitely some crazy visual content in the works as well.
What is your favorite healthy food?
I would say fruit is my favorite, specifically blackberries and blueberries.
And your favorite cheat food?
Any and all Italian food.
How would you explain your fashion style?
I’d describe my fashion style as a mix between streetwear and vampire chic.
What is your own definition of happiness?
Happiness to me is a feeling when you get butterflies in your stomach. It’s that feeling you get when everything feels right and aligned. You feel like you’re where you’re supposed to be.
If you could meet someone, living or dead, who would it be and why?
I would most like to meet Jimmy Page from Led Zeppelin. He’s the one that inspired my guitar playing since I was young and if I never heard his playing I would probably be an entirely different musician. I was always so fascinated by his playing and writing. He just makes it look so easy and seamless. He’s written some of the best riffs I’ve ever heard.
Best advice you’ve ever given?
You’re in charge of your own journey and don’t let anyone take away your happiness.
Where do you see yourself and your career in 5 years?
I see myself opening for some bigger acts on tour and playing at festivals. At least that’s where I want to be.
What is your favorite song to belt out in the car or at karaoke?
“You Found Me” by The Fray
Where can we follow you on social media?
