Hi Marissa, please tell us a little about yourself.
Hi I’m Marissa! I’m an LA-based singer-songwriter and musician. I’m originally from San Diego, but I moved to Los Angeles in 2021 to attend college and pursue music! I’m studying journalism and public relations, but music has always been a consistent commitment in my life and something that I can’t live without.
Describe your sound in three words.
Empowering, truthful, and complex.
Who influenced you, and why did you choose to make music?
Both of my parents equally influenced me. My mom was a musical theater professional for a while and my dad has always been a phenomenal guitar player, so I grew up in a household where music was always being played and encouraged. When I was about 11, my parents enrolled me in ukulele lessons where I met Charlie Jirkovsky who completely changed my perspective and knowledge about music. To this day, he continues to be a mentor to me in every musical pursuit, from songwriting to learning instruments to performing. I would say all three of these people inspired me to start making my own music.
Do you play any instruments?
Yes! I play guitar, piano, ukulele, and have been trying to learn the bass!
Do you ever get nervous?
I get nervous about releasing music, never about performing though!
Tell us about your new single, “Leaving You Tonight?”
“Leaving You Tonight” is such a fun song and it’s honestly very different from most of the songs I write and make. I would consider it to be a breakup anthem, as it touches on the emotional turmoil that can come from being in an inadequate relationship. The song has such great energy though, being very danceable and upbeat. I hope that when people listen to it they will feel motivated to reclaim their power and realize that they deserve better.
What is the most rewarding part of your work?
I find it very rewarding when people approach me or reach out to me and genuinely express how much they thoroughly relate to or appreciate the music I make. Or if they know the words to my songs, that speaks volumes to me and keeps me motivated to keep going.
How would your best friend describe you?
Probably charismatic and weird, but in the best way possible.
What’s next for Marissa McRoberts in 2024?
In regards to music, I will definitely be releasing songs throughout the course of 2024 and I plan to also do some live shows in the Los Angeles area! This year is going to be bittersweet as I’m going to be starting my senior year of college in the fall as well.
What is your own definition of happiness?
For me, happiness comes from being around the people I love, and I find a lot of joy in seeing the people I love experiencing moments of success or their own unique forms of happiness.
If you could meet someone living or dead, who would it be and why?
Every time I get asked this question I have the same answer, but it would be any, or all, of The Beatles. To sit down with any of them and discuss their songwriting process and the way in which they changed the world of music would be an honor.
Best advice ever given?
When I was younger, my mom would always say ‘Let your light shine’ before dropping me off from school, a quote from Matthew 5:16. It’s so simple, but has always stuck and reminds me to continue staying true to myself and living my life in a way where I don’t feel limited to what other people say or think.
Do you support any charities?
Yes, community service and philanthropy have always been a big part of my upbringing! In San Diego, I worked closely with the Ronald McDonald House of Charities as well as the San Diego Rescue Mission. Now I’m currently a part of the Alpha Phi chapter at my school where we dedicate a lot of our time towards philanthropic efforts for the Children’s Hospital of Los Angeles and women’s heart health!
Where do you see yourself and your career in 5 years?
I hope to continue living in southern California and by that time will have hopefully adopted my first dog. Music will always be an integral part of my life, so I obviously would love to continue making music and performing. However, I also love what I’m studying and could see myself pursuing public relations or media relations in the music or entertainment sphere as well!
What is your favorite song to belt out in the car or for karaoke?
At the moment, it’s “Mirrors” by Justin Timberlake.
