Describe your sound in three words.
Sophisticated, fun, and soulful.
Who influenced you, and why did you choose to make music?
My influences include Michael Jackson, Bruno Mars, and Whitney Houston. I chose to make music because it is something that has always brought me joy and fulfillment!
Do you play any instruments?
I can get by on piano!
Do you ever get nervous?
I am human, haha! But it’s always something I try to shake off and focus on the audience and making sure they have a great time.
Tell us about your new single, “Keep You Waiting?” What’s the story behind the song?
I’m traveling a lot for work now. Far away from home, different time zones, all in pursuit of my dreams. I’ve had a boyfriend for two and a half years now and he’s been so good to me. I was scared with me leaving all the time if he would stay. He had of course and has been super supportive I just worry I might mess it up being gone so much.
Can you walk us through your creative process for this single? How did the idea come to life?
I just flew into London and this was the first song I ever wrote outside of the US. In the studio my producer Eljay and cowriter Phoebe and I listened through reference tracks in pursuit of a fun pop dance song. I wanted to write what I was feeling authentically in the moment so Phoebe and I just chatted about me being gone so much and my fears and the lyrics just flowed!
Were there any specific experiences or emotions that fueled the writing and composition of this song?
I was feeling scared and worried with being gone so much. Long distance is so hard and I don’t want to lose this amazing thing I have with my boyfriend.
How do you usually start working on a new song? Do you begin with lyrics, melodies, or a concept?
Usually a concept, then melody and lyrics.
How involved were you in the production and arrangement of “Keep You Waiting?”
100% . Eljay did a wonderful job bringing my idea to life!
Now tell us about your experience on touring with popular group BLUE for their UK greatest hits tour?
This has been such an amazing and unforgettable experience. I couldn’t be more grateful for this tour and the amazing team that made this happen for me!
As a popular artist you are followed by so many people. How do you feel about that pressure of doing always the right thing, and encourage people to follow their dreams?
I try not to think of it as pressure, but more of an honor and privilege. I take it very seriously, but I’m also human so I try to be kind to myself as I’m my worst critic. Anything is possible if you just out your mind to it and life is too short to not take risks to reach your dreams.
What mindset helped make you so successful and popular?
Just putting in the work! Giving up is not an option.
How do you manage your busy schedule with your personal life?
It’s always a challenge and something I’m still learning to balance. Right now work is my number one priority, but I try to find time for family and a personal life for my sanity.
Which place that you have visited do you think changed you in a particular way, maybe for motivation or to see a different reality, etc.?
I think my first trip outside the country to Paris when I was in fourth grade opened my eyes to how big the world is and new cultures.
Tell us your top 3 countries to travel to.
Italy, United Kingdom, and Mexico!
And which countries or cities are still on your bucket list?
Tokyo, Singapore, Hong Kong, Thailand, and the list goes on!
What book should every entrepreneur read?
How to win friends and influence people by Dale Carnegie
What advice would you give to your younger self, and why?
To not worry so much and truly enjoy being young, it is so fleeting. And don’t complain about nap time cause it’s the best haha!
How would your best friend describe you?
Probably quirky, real, and fun!
If you were a book, what would be the title of the book and why?
Perfect is boring. I’ve struggled with trying to be perfect my entire life and truly, I could never be and my life wouldn’t make for an interesting story if I was anyway!
What’s next for Max Rae in 2024?
I’ll be touring around the US this summer and another tour in the UK this fall!
What is your favorite healthy food?
Kale salad from a restaurant called Flower Child with their avocado hummus!
And your favorite cheat food?
In-N-Out Burger.
How would you explain your fashion style?
Old school Hollywood with an edge.
What is your own definition of happiness?
For me, it’s doing what I feel called to do. We all exist for a purpose and as long as I’m fulfilling that, I’m happy!
If you could meet someone living or dead, who would it be and why?
Bruno Mars. He has been my biggest influence and I would love to pick his brain and learn from the man himself!
What would be your dream holiday, and who would you go with?
My dream holiday would be to visit all of the Disney parks in the world! I’d bring my mom, my grandfather, and my boyfriend!
Best advice ever given?
It’s cliché, but just be authentically you. There’s no one in the world like you and don’t let fear stop you from making your dreams a reality. You set your mind to it, you can do it.
Do you support any charities?
The New Mexico Christian Children’s Home and A21!
Where do you see yourself and your career in 5 years?
I would love to see myself headlining tours around the world!
What is your favorite song to belt out in the car or for karaoke?
If I Ain’t Got You by Alicia Keys.
What do you think of social media?
I think it can be a beautiful thing but also a very destructive thing. It’s important to check in with yourself and monitor what you watch.
